Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a type of phototherapy that uses low-intensity laser or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to stimulate cells and promote healing. The therapy has been used in the field of dentistry for several applications, including the treatment of periodontitis, which is an inflammatory condition that affects the tissues that support the teeth, such as the gums, bones, and ligaments.

Periodontitis is caused by the buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, on the teeth. This plaque can cause inflammation and damage to the gums and surrounding tissues, leading to the formation of pockets around the teeth. As the condition worsens, the pockets can deepen, the gums can recede, and the bones that support the teeth can become damaged, eventually leading to tooth loss.

LLLT can be used to reduce inflammation and promote healing in the gums and other tissues affected by periodontitis. The therapy works by increasing the energy production of cells, which can help to stimulate the healing process. The laser light is applied to the affected area, and the energy from the light is absorbed by the cells, stimulating the production of enzymes, proteins, and other molecules that are important for healing. The therapy can reduce the size of pockets around teeth, and increase the attachment of gums to the teeth by promoting the generation of new blood vessels, collagen and other molecules that can improve the quality of the tissue.

LLLT is typically performed by a dentist or periodontist, and multiple sessions are usually required to achieve the desired therapeutic effect. The number and duration of the sessions will depend on the severity of the condition, and the response of the patient to the therapy. It is important to note that LLLT is not a replacement for regular oral hygiene practices and scaling, but it can be a good adjunctive therapy with other conventional treatments like scaling and root planing, antibiotics and systemic anti-inflammatory drugs to achieve better results
