Mouth ulcers, also known as canker sores, are small painful lesions that can occur inside the mouth, on the tongue, or on the gums. They are common and usually resolve on their own within a week or two. The exact cause of mouth ulcers is not fully understood, but they can be triggered by a variety of factors, such as:

  • Mechanical irritation from dentures, braces, or other dental appliances
  • Trauma to the mouth, such as biting the tongue or cheek
  • Nutrient deficiencies, such as a lack of vitamin B12, iron, or folic acid
  • Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during menstruation
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Infections or immune system disorders
  • Certain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or chemotherapy drugs

Treatment of mouth ulcers usually involves home remedies to reduce pain and promote healing. These may include:

  • Avoiding spicy, acidic, or salty foods that can irritate the ulcer
  • Using over-the-counter pain relief gels or mouthwashes
  • Applying a paste made from baking soda and water to the ulcer
  • Avoiding oral hygiene products that contain sodium lauryl sulfate, which can irritate the ulcer

If the ulcer is large or does not heal within a few weeks, you should see a doctor or dentist. They can determine the cause of the ulcer and recommend more specific treatment if necessary
