Precautions After Tooth Extraction
Precautions After Tooth Extraction
Dr. Ahmed Javed Butt
Here are some general precautions to follow after having a tooth extracted:
Bite gently on the gauze pad placed by your dentist to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding persists, moisten the tea bag and place it over the bleeding area. The tannic acid in the tea helps to form a blood clot.
Avoid rinsing your mouth vigorously or spitting for the first 24 hours after the extraction. This can disturb the blood clot and cause bleeding.
Avoid smoking, which can slow the healing process.
Avoid hot liquids or food and drink cold fluids for the first day.
Avoid drinking through a straw for the first few days, as the sucking motion can dislodge the blood clot.
Avoid strenuous activity for the first day or two after the extraction.
Take any prescribed medication as directed.
If you have swelling, apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek for the first 36 hours. After 36 hours, use warm, moist heat to help with swelling.
Use over-the-counter pain medication as needed for discomfort.
Contact your dentist if you have persistent bleeding, severe pain, or other unusual symptoms
