Amalgam fillings are made by combining a powdered mixture of metals with a liquid, usually mercury. The mixture is then placed into the cavity in the tooth and allowed to harden. The mercury helps to bind the metals together, making the filling strong and durable. Once the filling is in place, it can be shaped and polished to match the contours of the tooth.

One of the main advantages of amalgam fillings is their durability. They can last for many years, often up to 20 or more, depending on the location and size of the filling. They are also relatively inexpensive, making them a popular choice for people who need to have multiple cavities filled.

Despite their durability and low cost, amalgam fillings have a number of drawbacks. One of the main concerns is that they contain mercury, which is a toxic substance. There is some debate over the safety of mercury in dental fillings, with some studies suggesting that it can cause health problems, including neurological problems, kidney damage, and immune system dysfunction. However, most dental and medical organizations, including the American Dental Association and the World Health Organization, consider amalgam fillings to be safe when used in appropriate amounts.

Another disadvantage of amalgam fillings is that they are not as aesthetically pleasing as other types of fillings, such as composite resin fillings. Amalgam fillings are silver in color and are often noticeable when a person smiles or talks. In addition, amalgam fillings can expand and contract with temperature changes, which can cause the tooth to crack or break.

Despite their drawbacks, amalgam fillings are still a widely used and effective treatment for cavities. They are durable, inexpensive, and can last for many years.
