 What is Gums Diseases

Dr Ahmed  Javed Butt

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection of the gums and other tissues that support the teeth. It is a common condition that can cause inflammation, pain, and tooth loss if left untreated. There are two main forms of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that affects only the gums. It is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. It is often caused by a build-up of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth. If gingivitis is not treated, it can progress to periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a more advanced form of gum disease that affects not only the gums, but also the bone and other tissues that support the teeth. It is characterized by deep pockets or spaces between the gums and teeth, as well as loose or shifting teeth. Periodontitis can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.

Gum disease is preventable with good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. It is important to brush and floss daily, and to see a dentist regularly for cleanings and exams. If you have gum disease, your dentist or periodontist will work with you to develop a treatment
